Company Overview
Breitling, a name synonymous with aviation and precision timekeeping, was founded in Saint-Imier, Switzerland in 1884 by Léon Breitling. A dedicated chronograph specialist, Léon sought to create robust and innovative timepieces that would serve the needs of demanding professions, particularly aviators.
From its inception, Breitling focused on chronographs, which were increasingly important in industrial, military, and scientific applications as well as in athletic organizations. By 1892, Breitling had grown substantially and relocated to La Chaux-de-Fonds, where it employed a staff of 60 people. In the first half of the 20th century, Breitling introduced both the first independent chronograph pushpiece and the second independent reset pushpiece, innovations that defined the modern chronograph.
However, it was with aviation that Breitling truly made its mark. In the 1930s, the brand produced onboard chronographs for aircraft cockpits, earning a reputation as a key supplier to the aviation industry. Breitling solidified its link with aviation during World War II, when it became the Royal Air Force’s official supplier of onboard chronographs.
In 1952, the brand launched the legendary Navitimer wrist chronograph, featuring a circular slide rule serving to perform all navigation-related calculations. A cult watch among pilots and aviation enthusiasts, the Navitimer has been continuously manufactured for almost 70 years – making it the world’s oldest mechanical chronograph still in production.
Breitling has also expanded its horizons to serve the needs of divers and sailors with collections like Superocean and Chronomat, combining its precision engineering with rugged durability and style.
Under the leadership of CEO Georges Kern, Breitling is focusing on its heritage and its longstanding association with aviation, while also looking to the future. Today, Breitling remains a true pioneer in the industry, constantly innovating and evolving, while maintaining its commitment to producing high-quality, precision-engineered timepieces.
Breitling’s collections continue to embody tool watches with a sophisticated twist, offering functionality that extends beyond the cockpit. Its timepieces are worn and loved by people around the world, including high-profile brand ambassadors from the worlds of sport, science, and cinema, further amplifying Breitling’s reach and legacy.
